At least two active addresses are needed for wash trades to create false liquidity trap. Perhaps another machine is programmed specifically to fleece the sheep of their money, and yet another couple addresses to implement a fake HFT stack of flash bid-ask orders which disappear faster than any human can hit them. Another address to store the pirate booty. That’s about 6 addresses required to be active to create a digital casino facade and fleece sheep. All would likely be on machines in the same room as the exchange server(s) (perhaps another address or two) as per shady HFT practise (but even HFTs aren’t allowed to be owned by exchanges in any direct or indirect way). So basically ONE person behind the 6 addresses would be my guess and to catch the thief would be trivial of the thief didn’t have a software kill switch similar to what Sam Bankman-Fried used before his computers were raided and his accounting deemed to be “paper and crayon” joke by the Federal reciever appointed to divest FTX of its bankrupt assets on behalf of creditors.
