Sui (SUI)

Most blockchains upgrade the same way:

- The core team ships new code.
- Validators update when they get around to it.
- Users find out when something breaks or changes without warning.

Sui built a completely different system.

Here is exactly how protocol upgrades work on Sui according to the official architecture docs:

- Every new feature starts locked behind a feature flag (a boolean set to false).

- The feature exists in the code but does nothing. Zero impact on the network.

- When validators upgrade their software, they do not automatically activate the new feature.

- They signal to the validator committee that they are ready to switch.

- If 2/3 or more of validators vote to enable the new version, it activates at the beginning of the next epoch.
Not mid-transaction. Not mid-block. At a clean epoch boundary.

- If fewer than 2/3 of validators agree, the feature stays locked.

No single entity can force a protocol change:

Not the Sui Foundation. Not Mysten Labs. Not any single validator.
