Micropayments have been failing since 1995.

Millicent, Beenz, Flooz, Brave’s BAT, Lightning’s L402… every single one shipped working technology.

And every single one died anyway...

WHY?

They never had a technology problem, they had a human problem.

Nick Szabo nailed it back in 1999: mental transaction costs.

That split-second pause where you ask yourself, "Is this tenth of a cent really worth it?", repeated fifty times a day, costs far more cognitive energy than the actual cash.

That’s why subscriptions and ads win every time. They eliminate the decision.

Which brings us to the new OpEd for BeInCrypto this week by Armin Ranjbar at @BCBcrypto, breaking down Linux’s x402 standard.

The interesting thing about x402 isn't that it lowers friction. It's that it removes the human entirely.

An AI agent doesn't have mental friction. Spending $0.001 on an API call is just basic arithmetic under a set budget, not anxiety, not decision fatigue.

The main barrier that buried 30 years of micropayment startups quietly dissolves as a side-effect of agentic commerce.

That said, let's keep it grounded:

The average x402 payment right now is around 32 cents, not a fraction of a penny.

A massive chunk of early volume is still just memecoin speculation, not autonomous agents buying dataset access.

This isn't the instant death of subscriptions or the immediate birth of a sub-cent economy. It’s early-stage machine plumbing.

But treated as infrastructure rather than hype, it’s well worth building for.

Is agentic payment the real unlock here, or are we just watching another classic micropayment hype cycle?
