The SocialFi track is far more crowded than I imagined, with over 22 pages of results when searching for "social" on Rootdata. However, very few Web3 social applications have entered our lives, let alone influenced our lifestyles like Twitter or TikTok. In my opinion, for a SocialFi project to succeed, its primary goal should be to meet the social needs of a certain group of people. And to compete with mature Web2 products, it must satisfy needs that other platforms cannot, only then will users be willing to migrate. I previously introduced @TownsProtocol, which launched on Binance Alpha, and it's solving this problem in this way: by directly addressing the pain points of creators on Web2 platforms – lack of ownership, difficulty in monetization, and opaque earnings – to build an on-chain Discord+Telegram. Towns Protocol is a complete set of open-source protocols for building decentralized communication applications. It consists of an EVM-compatible L2 chain, decentralized off-chain streaming nodes, and smart contracts deployed on Base. It has currently raised a total of $46 million, led by a16z Crypto and Coinbase Ventures. I briefly experienced the product, and first of all, the functions are quite complete, almost replicating the Discord model, with different groups (called Spaces here) containing various functional sub-channels. The difference is that these Spaces are owned by the creator and come with a set of monetization tools including tickets, subscriptions, tips, paid events, etc. In layman's terms, it's more like an on-chain paid group. This is also the core of Towns' economic model: all activities on Towns Chain will generate protocol fees, all of which will be used for $TOWNS buyback and burning, reducing circulating supply. Then, through rewards for staking and DAOs, and additional incentives for active Spaces, the token value is fed back to token holders, forming long-term growth momentum. Ben Rubin, the founder of Towns, is the creator of the multi-million user social app Houseparty, and is very experienced in the operation and growth of social products. The concept of paid groups is also unique and has a very real demand. I think Towns' mechanism design is already very complete. At this stage, it needs to attract more high-quality content creators to this platform to adopt this model and bring natural user growth.
