Understanding B20 in Simple Terms

For years, almost every token on Ethereum and EVM chains followed the same model: the ERC-20 standard.

Think of ERC-20 as a template for creating digital tokens. It works well, but it comes with some problems:

• Every token needs its own smart contract.
• Developers have to build extra features themselves, such as freezing accounts or blocking bad actors.
• Smart contracts need security audits, which are expensive.
• More code means more chances for bugs and exploits.
• Transactions can be relatively expensive.

#Base’s new B20 standard tries to solve these problems by changing how tokens are built.

If ERC-20 was the first generation of tokens, B20 is attempting to be a more institution-friendly and infrastructure-native version, designed for the next phase of on-chain finance on @base.
