I just asked my drug dealer if he wanted me to pay him in monero and he responded “you want me thrown in jail? Send me USDC”

Paying with Monero, the drug dealer wants USDC instead, pure humor

A Monero investor raised a valid concern on $SAL smartcontracts #privacy: Smart contracts usually leak intent through execution traces, even if balances are private. @salvium_io answer is actually very interesting. They’re not building Ethereum-style smart contracts. They’re trying to extend the CryptoNote (Monero) model with protocol-level execution and async flows, designed to keep: 🟢 sender private 🟢 receiver private 🟢 amounts private 🟢 and execution hidden So the goal is: 👉 add programmability without recreating transparency leaks Monero solved this by avoiding contracts entirely. Salvium is trying to solve it while enabling new functionality. If they pull this off, this isn’t just an upgrade. It’s a completely new category: private programmable finance And that could be a real game changer.

That concern is valid for traditional smart contract designs - but it assumes Ethereum-style transparency or exposed execution traces. That’s not what Salvium is doing. We’re extending the CryptoNote model (as used by Monero) with protocol-level contract execution (protocol_tx + async flows), built specifically to preserve sender, receiver, and amount privacy - without introducing a transparent execution layer. We’re also not pretending DeFi is “free” from privacy trade‑offs. It isn’t. The difference is we’re designing around those constraints at the protocol level, rather than inheriting them. So, the real question isn’t Monero vs smart contracts - it’s whether you can add expressive functionality to a privacy‑first UTXO system without recreating the visibility leaks of account‑based chains. Monero sidesteps that surface entirely. Salvium is working to minimize it - while still enabling new capabilities.

To put the Google Quantum breakthrough into privacy context: Monero is cooked. Every transaction since 2014 sits on a public ledger, "hidden" by elliptic curve math. Quantum breaks ECC, and 10+ years of ring signatures, stealth addresses, RingCT all unravel retroactively. Their own research lab calls it "universal evaporation of privacy." FCMP++ helps going forward but does zero for the historical chain. The damage is already baked in. Zcash is architecturally different. Fully shielded transactions never put public keys on the ledger. Nullifiers use symmetric crypto (keyed PRFs), not ECC. A quantum adversary looking at shielded Zcash sees... nothing. The data was never there. Not perfectly quantum-proof yet (key exchange, viewkeys still use ECC, in-band secret distribution needs Tachyon to close), but the failure mode is categorically different.

Because Monero keeps public keys on chain all of Monero history will be revealed by quantum computers. Zcash public keys are not published and therefore Zcash transactions will not be revealed by QC. https://t.co/Xf4fguT3sC
